James Hebblethwaite

James is the son of Thomas Hebblethwaite and Mary Rhodes. He was born on the 30th of June 1788 in Woodhouse, Leeds in West Yorkshire and was christened on the 6th of August 1788 in St. Peter, Leeds.  James died on the 26th of March 1841 in Leeds at the age of 52.

In this year, 1788;

  • ‘The Daily Universal Register’ that began publishing three years previously has been renamed ‘The Times’.

  • The Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC) founded last year by Thomas Lord, codifies the rules and regulations of cricket.

Just two days before he is to marry, James was a witness to the will of his future father-in-law Reverend Joseph Whiteley on the 4th of May 1815.  Then on the 6th of May 1815 the couple and Mary were wed in Leeds Parish Church in West Yorkshire.  The marriage banns of the Parish Church of Leeds, give the following information;

James Hebblethwaite of the City of Oporto in the Kingdom of Portugal.

Mary Whiteley of this parish, spinster.

6th May 1815 signed by James and Mary in the presence of P. L Whiteley and J. N Whiteley.

The marriage was reported in the Leeds Intelligencer on the 8th of May 1815;

‘Saturday, Mr. James Hebblethwaite, of Oporto, merchant, to Mary, eldest daughter of the Rev. Joseph Whiteley, M. A. Head Master of the Free Grammar School, in this town, and Vicar of Lastingham.’

The couple must have returned to Oporto after their marriage because Marianne was born there in 1816 and was christened there on the 19th of June that year.

The couple were in Oporto from at least the 19th of June 1816 when their first child Marianne was born at the British Factory Chaplaincy in Oporto in 1816 and was christened there on the 19th of June, until at least the 28th of April 1823 when James and Mary baptised their children at the Chaplaincy in Oporto.  The record is not to clear but the children's names appear to be, Harriet, Joseph Whiteley, Thomas Frederick and James Edward.

Two years after Marianne was born the couple had a son, John James was born and they christened him on the 10th of January 1818 in Oporto.

Harriet was born on the 28th of April 1819 and was followed a year later by another son, Joseph Whiteley on the 3rd of October 1820.  Thomas Frederick was born on the 1st of October the following year and finally James Edward was born in 1823.

The ‘British Factory, Oporto’.  In this context it is an establishment for traders to carry on business in a foreign country or it is a merchant company’s trading station.  The Factory often included a chapel and chaplain so that the merchants could attend English language, Protestant worship.  It is therefore likely that James and Mary resided in Portugal for some time, possibly up to 1835 since Mary died in Oporto.

Children from this marriage were:

i.     Marianne Hebblethwaite – (1816 - 1894)

ii.    John James Hebblethwaite – (1818 – 5/8/1876)

iii.    Harriet Jane Hebblethwaite – (28/4/1819 – Jun 1835)

iv.   Joseph Whiteley Hebblethwaite – (3/10/1820 – 1899)

v.    Thomas Frederick Hebblethwaite – (1/10/1821 – 2/12/1890)

vi.   James Edward Hebblethwaite – (1823 – 7/5/1903)

Just over a year after Mary’s death James remarried on the 27th of June 1836.  He married Eleanor Whitely in the Parish of St. Gregory by St. Paul’s in the City of London.  James is given as widower and Eleanor as spinster on the Banns.  Eleanor is Mary’s sister.

Both James and Eleanor are given as ‘of this Parish’ on the Banns.

A year after their marriage James and Eleanor were celebrating the birth of their first daughter, Mary Eleanor on the 31st of March 1837 in Leeds.  They baptised her four weeks later on the 28th of April in St. Peter’s in Leeds.  At this time James is still a merchant.

On the 11th of October 1839 James’ second daughter, Amelia by his second wife Eleanor, was born.  They baptised her on the 8th of November 1839 at St. Peter, Leeds Parish Church, Leeds.  The family at this time were living at Belgrave Street, Leeds and James’ occupation was given as Gentleman.

This is also confirmed by an entry in ‘A General and Commercial Directory of the Borough of Leeds.’ 1839 edition.  Where there is also an entry for his son, John James, Oporto Merchant, importer of foreign wines.  Commercial Buildings, Basinghall Street, h. 37 Wade Lane.

On the 3rd of April 1841 the Leeds Mercury had this notice of his death as;

On Sunday 21st ult. ……  Same day, in his 53rd year, Mr James Hebblethwaite, of this town, late of Oporto.

Also on the 3rd of April the Leeds Intelligencer had this notice;

DEATHS

In 1851 their daughter Amelia, aged 11, was at a private school at 19 Kings Parade, Chelsea, London.

i.     Mary Eleanor Hebblethwaite – (28/4/1837 - )

ii.    Amelia Isabella Hebblethwaite – (11/10/1839 – 20/2/1897)

On the 10th of September 1856 Eleanor’s daughter Mary Eleanor married George Osbourne Browne in Brighton in Sussex.

The census sheet of 1861 has the first column ripped off but Eleanor is in Kingston upon Hull at the home of her daughter;

Personal estate under £450.

In 2016 this would have been equivalent to £49 677.

Noted events in her life were:

*  Living: 1861, Kingston upon Hull.

*  Living: 1871, 18 Queens Road, Marylebone, London.

Although there is a James Hebblethwaite who is listed as a Maltster in Sedbergh according to; Baines Directory and Gazetteer Directory in 1822 and also in Pigots Directory of Professions and Trades in 1829 and 1834, it is unlikely to be the same James because of the christening of Thomas in Oporto.  Also since Mary died in Oporto in 1835 it is quite possible that James and Mary resided in Portugal for some time.
