William Henry Hebblethwaite

William is the son of Thomas Frederick Hebblethwaite and Mary Frances Gleadow and he was born on the 12th of August 1851 in Kingston-upon-Hull, Yorkshire.  He died on the 23rd of March 1930 at Cross Hill House, Barrow upon Humber, Lincolnshire at the age of 78. He is buried in the Municipal Cemetery, Barrow upon Humber.

General Notes: Possess;

Marriage Certificate - marriage witnessed by Louis Hebblethwaite and Mary Elizabeth Cherry.

At the age of about 10 William was living at the family home at 7 Park Street, Myton, Kingston-Upon-Hull in Yorkshire.  By the time of the 1871 census on the 2nd of April the family had moved to 2 Granville Terrace, Beverley Road, Sculcoates, Kingston-upon-Hull and he was now at work as a land agents clerk.  This is likely to be at his father’s firm T.F. Hebblethwaite Land Agency which later became Hebblethwaite & Son.

On the 1st of June 1876 William married Sarah Ann Cherry at the Parish Church, Barrow upon Humber in Lincolnshire and by 1879 they were living at 24 Hutt Street, Sculcoates, Kingston-upon-Hull, Yorkshire.  The marriage was witnessed by his brother Louis and her sister Mary.

They were still there at the time of the 1881 census on the 3rd of April but William was now a land agent and so the firm may well be Hebblethwaite & Son.  On the 8th of November of that year William and Sarah baptised their daughter Kathleen at St. Silas’ Church in Sculcoates, York.

However on the 1891 census the family are at High Street in Barrow upon Humber, which is the home of his in-laws.  William and George Harpur Cherry, his father-in-law, are both listed as heads of their families.  It appears that he was no longer a land agent as he is categorised as living off own means.

Ten years later the 1901 census shows that the family, apart from Constance and Basil, who was now seventeen years old, had moved to Market Place, Glanford Brigg in Barrow-upon-Humber.  William is now classed as being a retired land agent and surveyor.  So probably before he was 50 years old at some time between 1891 and 1901 he had been able to retire.

On Wednesday 1st of April 1903 Hull’s Daily Mail reported;

Barrow.

Primitive Methodist Bazaar – The opening of the bazaar in aid of Chapel Funds on Tuesday afternoon, was very largely attended.  The decorations of the room displayed considerable taste.  Miss N. Corden presided, and the following young people assisted at the ceremony, each taking part of a stanza (adapted for the occasion by the Rev F. G. Wallis), viz., Percy Rimington, Ethel Bell, Etta Thompson, Ivy Dawson, Cyril Hebblethwaite, Ernest Roberts, Lily Wrack, and Walter Bell.  Mr W. H. Hebblethwaite was at the organ.  The stallholders were: - Fancy, Mrs D. Codd, Mrs E. Dawson, and Miss Jump; toy, Misses Roberts, Westoby, and Bilton; tea and refreshment, Mrs Wright and Mrs Cuthbert; bran tub Misses Bell and Corden.

It is possible that Miss Westoby is related to William’s wife as her mother is Frances Westoby.

On the 1911 census William Henry is retired and his wife Sarah Ann is living off her own means.  In the household are five of their six children.  Eleanor May 34, Constance May 30, Gertrude Daisy 28, Basil 27 and Cyril Gleadow 20.  None of the girls are working but Basil is a general clerk working at home and Cyril works as a clerk in a cycle works.  This census also states that William Henry and Sarah Ann had six children all of whom are still alive and that the house at Cross Hill had nine rooms, hopefully quite a few of them bedrooms.

The Kelly’s directory of 1913 states that William, and presumably the family are still at Cross Hill House.  Indeed it stays the family home as William died there on the 23rd of March 1930.

On Wednesday the 21st of May 1930 the Hull Daily Mail reported William’s will;

Mr William Henry Hebblethwaite, of Cross Hill House, Barrow-on-Humber, who died on March 23rd, left unsettled property of the gross value of £3118 1s 10d, with net personalty (sic) £2793 10s 10d.

And probate is given as follows;

widow.  Effects £3118 1s 10d.
