George Harpur Cherry

George is the son of Edward Cherry and Sarah and was born on the 28th of February 1823 in Kingston upon Hull, Yorkshire.  He was christened on the 26th of March 1823 in Holy Trinity, Kingston upon Hull.  He died on the 6th of November 1897 in Barrow upon Humber, Lincolnshire, at the age of 74, and was buried on the 9th of November 1897 in Barrow upon Humber. 

 

George married Frances Westoby on the 16th of January 1843 in Barrow upon Humber.  The wedding was witnessed by his father Edward Cherry, and her sister Charlotte Westoby.

 

Later in the year they had their first child, George Westoby who they baptised in the new year on the 3rd of January 1844 in Barrow upon Humber. 

 

A year later they had a second child, John Grantham and they baptised him on the 27th of March 1845.  He was followed in 1847 by Frances Charlotte and she was baptised on the 26th of November of that year.

 

The following year James was born and he was baptised on the 29th of March 1850 in Barrow upon Humber.

                                   

In 1851 George and Frances were living in the High Street in Barrow upon Humber. George was working as a Draper & Grocer.  The census shows that they had a house servant, Mary King aged 15 years.   Later in the year on the 19th of September they had another daughter, Sarah Ann who they baptised the following month on the 15th.

 

Some four years later in 1855 they had another child, Mary Elizabeth who they christened on the 8th of November that year again in Barrow upon Humber.

 

Sadly on the 30th of May 1856 at the Anglican church of Holy Trinity in Barrow upon Humber the couple buried their first child, George Westoby who had died three days earlier, he was just twelve years old.

 

In the 1856 Lincolnshire History Gazetteer and Directory, Brigg directory, George is listed twice.  On page 688 as Cherry G. Harpur his occupation is given as a Bookseller and Stationer in Barrow upon Humber, Lincolnshire.  But on the next page, page 689 he is listed as Cherry Geo. Harpur a Grocer, Draper & Druggist also in Barrow upon Humber.

 

In 1857 the couple had their final child, Georgiana who was christened on the 20th of August of that year in Barrow upon Humber.

 

From 1861 to 1881 George and Frances are still living at their home in the High Street.  Also George occupation is given as Draper, Grocer and Druggist.

 

Around June 1871 saw the wedding of their son John Grantham to Mary Elizabeth Hobson in Sculcoates, Kingston upon Hull.

 

Their daughter Sarah Ann married William Henry Hebblethwaite on the 1st of June 1876 in the Parish Church of Barrow upon Humber.

 

On the 7th of February 1879 the Hull Packet reported that at Barton Petty Sessions on Monday that Mr. Geo. Harpur, Cherry of Barton was granted a petroleum licence.

 

At the age of 66 Frances died on the 16th of June 1883 in Barrow upon Humber and was buried three days later on the 19th of June 1883 in Barrow upon Humber. 

 

In 1889 George again had the sad task of burying one of his children, Charlotte Frances who died on the 3rd of November and was buried four days later in Barrow upon Humber.  She was 42 years old and had never married.

 

By the time of the 1891 census George is a widower and he is listed in the same household as his daughter Sarah Ann and her husband William Henry Hebblethwaite.  His occupation is now  given only as Druggist.

 

After his death in 1897 probate was granted to his daughters Mary Elizabeth and Georgiana.

Frances Westoby

Frances is the daughter of John Westoby and Frances Quickfall and was born in 1817 in Barrow upon Humber.  She was christened on the 5th of July 1817 in Barrow upon Humber.  She died on the 16th of June 1883 in Barrow upon Humber at the age of 66, and was buried on the 19th of June 1883 in Barrow upon Humber.
