John was known as Jack

Possess

Death Certificate, Marriage Certificate - Given as age 23, so his date of birth is 1882/1883

Although believed to have died at Newark Railway station c1942 as per Dudley Andrews, John died at the General Hospital in Ilkeston, Derbyshire.  The cause of death was Cerebral Haemorrhage and Arterial Degeneration.  His wife Florence was in attendance at his death.  Residence of both John and Florence is given as 36 Forester Street, Nottingham.

As his death took place in Ilkeston, some 14 miles from home it is possible that the haemorrhage took place whilst John was at work on the railways near Ilkeston.

A scholar in 1891 John was living with his parents at the Great Northern Station house in Nuthall, Nottinghamshire.  John was to follow in his father's footsteps and work on the railways.

By 1901 John was living in Linby in Nottinghamshire and had begun his working life on the railways as a porter.

John married Florence Louisa Winterbotham Peet on the 4th of June 1906 in Barnby Gate Weslyan Chapel, Newark, Nottinghamshire.  At the time of the wedding John was living at 31 Carnarvon Street, Netherfield in Nottingham and was working as a shunter on the railways.

Dudley had spoken of his belief that John Henry, his father was a twin and that the twin had died at or close to birth, but on 1911 Census John & Florence are listed as having one child born alive and is still living, this is John Henry.  The census shows that they were living at 2 York Street in Netherfield, which was a four roomed house.  John was working as a railway brakeman, possibly at Colwick Sidings.

In December 1938 it was announced in the House of Commons that in the event of war, a National Register would be taken that listed the personal details of every civilian in Great Britain and Northern Ireland.  This Register was to be a critical tool in coordinating the war effort at home.  It would be used to issue identity cards, organise rationing and more.  On the 3rd of September 1939 Britain declared war on Germany and Britain’s involvement in the Second World War began.  Subsequently it was announced that National Registration Day would be the 29th of September 1939.

At that date John is a railway guard living at 38 Forester Street, Netherfield, Nottingham, with him are his wife Florence and his son John Henry (Jack), together with two others whose records are officially closed at the present time.  It can be assumed that these two are his grandsons David Anthony and Derek.  Noreen, his daughter-in-law is not registered at this home, she is in Chelsea in London, and so it appears that Jack and Noreen had by this time split up.

There is a John Andrews born 15th November 1882 who was a Goods Guard at Colwick Sidings working for London & North Eastern Railways, started work 7th November 1897.  By 31st October 1939 he had a weekly wage of £3 and 5 shillings.

Florence Louisa Winterbotham Peet

Florence is the daughter of Henry Peet and Marian Whitworth and was born on the 16th of July 1879 in Newark On Trent, Nottinghamshire and died in 1957 at the age of 78.

Found on Census for 1881 as Florence L. W. Peet presuming that the L.W. stands for Louisa   Winterbotham.  As such there is only one entry in the 1881 and 1891 census for such a name.

In 1901 there is a Florence Peet aged 21 from Newark who is working as a Housemaid and Domestic at the Rectory in Linby.  Home to William Weddall, Clergyman, Susan Weddall his wife and Edward Weddall their son.  They also employed Mary Gee as a cook.
